I work with non-specific effects of vaccines, mainly the tuberculosis vaccine BCG, and have in this function spent 4½ years in West Africa. My main discoveries are that BCG provided at birth reduces the risk of neonatal sepsis by >50%, that developing a BCG scar and even the size of the scar is associated with reduced infant mortality. My current research focuses on the vertical effects of being born to a mother with a BCG scar.
