After graduation in Medicine (1984) and specialization in Tropical Medicine (1988), he has been acquiring clinical experience in Brazil, Lisbon, Guinea-Bissau and Angola.
 

Since 1991, he has been teaching on tropical medicine subjects at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (NOVA University, Lisbon), in Angola, Brazil, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
 

His main research interests are in Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), Malaria, Chagas disease, Neglected Tropical Diseases, Travel Medicine, and bioethics and clinical research in developing countries.  

 

For the last 20 years he has participated in several clinical studies and clinical trials on HAT, in collaboration with the SwissTPH, DNDi and WHO for the implementation of new treatments.
